Anis, how does your script compare to the one at http://www.mediacollege.com/internet/javascript/form/limit-characters.html ?

To be honest, I know very little about JavaScript and it's hard to decide which one is better.

At any rate, I'm already using PHP to prevent users from entering more than the allotted number of characters into my form's textarea. I have also included a "title" attribute for the textarea's parent div with the value of "250 characters max". (Of course, users will not see that tooltip if they use the keyboard to tab through the form's fields instead of navigating with the mouse.) But the main reason for using a JavaScript function like yours and the other one I referred to would be to give users feedback on when they are approaching the character limit.

Nice script! Exactly what I was looking for. I also like that you posted it without using JQuery as well.

I get the following error on every keypress:

Warning: The 'charCode' property of a keyup event should not be used. The value is meaningless.
